What Does The Bible Say About Masturbation? Explore God
The goal of the Christian life is to be pure in thought and deed. I believe that the issue of masturbation comes down to this. Therefore, I believe that though masturbation under certain circumstances may not be sinful, the desire to be sexually pure and holy should move the Christian to avoid it.
There are no specific references to masturbation in the Bible; Christians are left without clear instructions on the matter. Most Christians agree that God made sex to be good and that sex is an important part of marriage. But nothing is said about self.
The fact is that many Christian women masturbate and feel horribly guilty about it. Ive met women who feel more shame about masturbation than they do about having an adulterous affair. Yet the Bible is silent on the issue of masturbation and says a whole lot about adultery.
Let’s be clear, masturbation is an act of instant, self-gratification. It is quite the opposite of the self-control that we are constantly reminded of in the Bible. Self-control is an act of obedience to our Holy God and a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) an act that requires restraint, thought, intentionality, and delayed gratification.
The Bible nowhere explicitly states that masturbation is a sin, but there is no question that the actions that usually lead to masturbation are sinful. Masturbation is nearly always the result of lustful thoughts, inappropriate sexual stimulation, and/or pornography. It is these problems that need to be dealt with.
Therefore masturbation produces real and legitimate guilt and stands in the way of obedience." – Excerpt from John Piper, Missions and Masturbation on Christianity Is Masturbation a Sin.
So the question for Christian ethics is not, “Is masturbation sinful?” Its, “What could possibly be wrong with it?” Now, this is the best-case scenario we tend to believe about masturbation,.
