A typical embryo sac is ellipsoidal in structure with tapering ends and it is made up of cellulosic cell wall. Embryo sac is present at the centre of the nucellus of the ovule. It is seven celled and eight nucleated structure which is composed of three celled egg apparatus, three antipodals and a bi nucleated central cell or secondary nucleus.

A typical mature embryo sac of Angiosperms is a 7-celled and 8-nucleate structure. (i) At the micropylar end, an egg apparatus is present which consists of an egg cell and 2 synergid cells. Synergids contain filiform apparatus which guides the pollen tube entry into the embryo sac during fertilisation. (ii) At the chalazal end, three antipodal cells are present.

The synergids have a dense cytoplasm, abundant organelles, and strong polarity. Little cytoplasm is present in the egg cell, yet there are many vacuoles. The center of the cell is taken up by a large vacuole, and the cytoplasm is pushed towards the edges to form obvious cytoplasmic cords.

The ovule comprises the inner and outer integument. Large quantities of secretions in the micropylar canal exit and may participate in the guidance of the entry of the pollen tube into the embryo sac. The synergids have a dense cytoplasm, abundant organelles, and strong polarity.
